How does a giant ship float? We will investigate buoyancy, density, floating, sinking and the science behind the world's first 'Eureka!' moment, the Archimedes Principle. Activities include the use of a kiddie pool where kids will test out their own creations.

Session 2 - Ship Shape Science
What do we have to think about when designing a ship? How do levers, wheels, axles, pulleys, and inclined planes help to operate ships and sailboats? We will do a scavenger hunt around the museum to discover all of the types of simple machines and types of boats, ships, and uses. Each child will build their own boat to take home.

Session 3 - Junior History Detective
Travel back to the 1800s to discover our maritime history! We will explore daily life from shore to sea and learn basic skills without the support of modern technology. Participate in games and activities, and make a craft.

Session 4 - Marine Explorers
Become a marine science explorer at shore of the Peconic Bay and join us outside to examine the science of the Peconic Bay estuary. Activities will include water quality sampling, viewing plankton and learning about the tides.

Session 7 - Sound & Bay 
We will take a field trip to the Long Island Sound to learn about the differences between our local waters and collect artifacts to make an art project for our final session on August 20th. Sneakers or water shoes are required.
